Basics for lighting in photography

You may be a professional photographer with wide knowledge of light techniques, but if you are an amateur, it might help you to watch these few tips in this video in order to improve your photos before you go with us to the end:

there are general three factors of light that affects your photos, it is the tense of the light, the distance between it and the subject, and its color. Here we share with you some of the simple techniques to improve your skills in the lighting in photography:

1- For natural photo, you need the light to be soft and flowing, the sharp light may be used in specific photos! But for natural ones you need the source of light to be wide and not direct, this will make your photo full of light rays from several directions.

2- If you want your subject to look big and clear, move the light near to it! The opposite is right! When you want your subject to look small, thin, or in the back scene move the light away of it. This is one of the most known rules in the lighting in photography from the old history of it.

3- Try to scat light as you can! You may be noticed that photos in the sunny day are not as good as those in cloudy one! This is because clouds and fog scat the light and make it softer on the subject you need to shoot. They also help in disappearing the shadows! This can help you a lot unless you need to take a sunny photo. In studios, we used to know this rule of lighting in photography, and use white fabric or diaphanous plastic to spread the light and scat it.

4- Use reflectors! They also help as a diffusion for the light. Studios usually have many equipment to reflect light. Not only on matt surfaces, also shinny ones are used but not in direct narrow way! Otherwise, they will reflect light as it is! We can use crumple and re-spread aluminum foil for this purpose.

5- Remember this rule of lighting in photography: photographer will always need his flash! Shinny places or sunny days do not mean that the source of light is enough for your photos! The far light sources mean more shadows! You will always need your flash to lighten the small details in your subject, to remove shadows, and to keep the main source of light fall off.

6- Small details can appear by increasing the angle in which the light is hitting the subject. If you are shooting a portrait photo, you need to make the source of the light close to the axis of the lens in order to keep the wrinkles of the face hidden as possible. On the other hand, food photos or landscapes need the light to hit from the side in order to emphasize the small details.

7- Use shadows! You do not always need to get rid of the shadows; they help in making the photo three-dimensional one! Different positions of light can help you in giving the subjects more volume by using the shadows. Experiment plays its role here! Fashion photographers use shadows to hide details and to show others! This will be very helpful also in portrait photos.

8- Color is there! We used to say that the light is white in sunny days, cloudy skies, early hours of morning, or even indoors! The digital cameras can though distinguish the color of the light! Color is one of the most important elements that affects lighting in photography! Experiment also plays its role here; as a profession photographer you can set your digital camera’s color balance on cloudy in sunny days for
example in order to get more golden brightness on your landscape photo!

Even profession photographers do not stop reading about light and its effects on their photos constantly. Because they know well the importance of lighting in photography and improving their skills in using it.
